Part of the Biozone Student Workbook series, this 2009 edition follows the guidelines of the AS biology syllabus for AQA.
Combined review with the Model Answers companion
Set at an affordable £11 ‘AQA Biology AS Student Workbook’ by Biozone offers a good revision source to an appropriate degree of depth.
Designed specifically for the AQA exam board this book is usefully split into units that coincide with the AQA modular series. This makes it easier for students to navigate and make effective use of the information contained within.
The questions and accompanying model answer booklet are pitched appropriately to an AS level standard and there is a useful ‘Skills in Biology’ section, which provides a step by step guide to developing proficiency with investigation and data analysis.
For those who wish to develop their knowledge this book helpfully provides links with the internet where further resources on a relevant subject can easily be sourced. For each section there is also a list of textbooks and periodicals significant for each topic.
At first glance this workbook appears uninspiring to look into. Although there is a promising cover, there is no colour to be found inside but a lot of text and the font is small. However on closer inspection, you realise that the arrangement is decidedly visual, with a nice balance of constructive diagrams and ‘real-life’ images.
An intelligent amalgamation of a text book and revision guide, I would recommend this book to students who could work past the small font and colourless design. Although specifically designed as a student resource there is a supporting Teacher resource CD so it does have potential for work in the classroom also.
